Data Product Owner
Job Description
EXL Service is seeking a Data Product Owner to build and deliver data products end-to-end, with an initial focus on Game data covering Football and Player Health and Safety. This role helps translate stakeholder priorities into a governed, scalable approach as legacy datasets are migrated into the central data platform called “Gridiron.”
Role Overview
This position is accountable for how data products are developed and delivered, primarily for the Game (Football and Player Health and Safety) domain. The scope includes ensuring that end-to-end data pipelines supporting the Game are developed in a scalable, repeatable, and well-governed manner.
Initially, the work emphasizes collaboration with cross-functional data professionals across Football and Player, Health and Safety domains to migrate data from legacy environments into Gridiron. In addition to the core specialization in legacy-to-Gridiron migration, the responsibilities may extend to other data domains that have high-priority migration needs.
The Data Product Owner will partner with stakeholders across Data and Analytics and collaborate with the League and possibly Clubs. The role connects strategic priorities and requirements from business and senior Data and Analytics stakeholders and helps prioritize execution with a multidisciplinary team of data specialists including data engineers, architects, and analysts.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with stakeholders to shape the D&A vision/roadmap and steer a cross-functional data team delivering data products for analytics and BI.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for the PHS/Football team on the Central Data team platform, Gridiron.
- Provide strategic input on prioritizing data migration efforts from legacy environments to Gridiron.
- Steward the league’s Game data assets and maximize their use to support business outcomes.
- Work in an agile environment by reviewing business needs, prioritizing and maintaining the backlog, refining roadmaps, planning sprints, and identifying opportunities and risks.
- Facilitate design sessions and drive decision making while balancing short-term benefits with long-term strategic outlook.
- Support a cross-functional pod in clarifying requirements and features, including definition of DoD and acceptance criteria.
- Partner with engineering leaders to balance delivery of business-driving product features with platform capabilities supporting scalability and resiliency.
- Build a culture of learning, knowledge sharing, and high performance by assigning tasks based on skills, strengths, and the learning and development needs of pod members.
- Advocate for technical and operational excellence by ensuring highly scalable and repeatable capabilities are developed in an effective manner.
Requirements
- University degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or related field.
- 8+ years of relevant experience in a product owner, delivery lead or team lead capacity.
- 5+ years of relevant experience leading the development of data products, cloud data platforms, data lakes or data warehouses.
- Proven track record of delivering impactful products to market that enable stakeholder use cases.
- Experience across the software development life cycle and agile methodologies such as Scrum and Kanban.
- Excellent knowledge of Jira and Confluence.
- Strong attention to detail, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to liaise effectively across all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work as a team player and self-starter.
