Position overview
We are seeking a technically adept Product Design Engineer to provide specialized product support and design solutions for our engineering and sales teams. The role translates customer needs into practical, manufacturable designs and guides product features, specifications, and execution.
Location
Avoca, IA. On-site only, not remote or hybrid.
Compensation
Hourly range: $26 - $40 per hour; annual range: $54,500 - $83,000, with pay commensurate with experience.
Engagement and industry
Direct Hire position in the Manufacturing sector. Company size ranges from 100 to 500 million in annual revenue.
Responsibilities
- Assess customer design requirements and align them with project objectives in partnership with the sales team.
- Develop detailed drawings, layouts, schematics, and proposals using SolidWorks and AutoCAD or DraftSight.
- Create designs that align with existing manufacturing processes and facilities based on equipment and performance specifications.
- Manage Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), implement corrective actions, and address design obstacles.
- Participate in design reviews with sales, manufacturing, and quality teams to deliver tailored solutions.
- Provide on-site engineering support, conduct inspections, and assist with commissioning activities.
- Interpret and comply with relevant industry standards and codes such as UL, NEC, and NFPA.
- Revise existing designs to improve product quality and reduce recurring issues.
- Develop specialized knowledge in assigned product lines and assist in testing and analyzing results.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in Mechanical Design, Electrical Design, or Engineering Technology, with 3–5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (2018 or newer) and SolidWorks.
- Strong understanding of mobile electrification systems in industrial and commercial settings.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate technical requirements to internal teams and clients.
- BS or Associate degree in Mechanical/Electrical Design or Engineering Technology with 3–5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD
- Ability to create detailed technical drawings and layouts
- Knowledge of regulatory codes UL, NEC, and NFPA
- Problem-solving skills for custom designs and ECOs
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This role is primarily office-based with frequent sitting, computer use, and occasional walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Candidates should be able to lift up to 25 pounds regularly. Close vision is required. The work environment is typically quiet, though visiting production or testing areas may require PPE such as safety glasses and steel-toe shoes. While the position does not include direct supervisory duties, it provides technical guidance and leadership to designer-level team members.
