Chief Product Owner, Global Operations
Job Description
The Chief Product Owner, Global Operations leads product vision and measurable technology outcomes for Operations across multiple operational domains within Wellington’s Infrastructure Platform.
Responsibilities
- Own Global Operations product strategy and a multi-year roadmap that translates firm strategy and functional priorities across Investment Operations, Client Operations, Fund Services, and Private Operations into a single prioritized product agenda.
- Define measurable outcomes for each Operations product aligned to Investment and Client Platform needs; hold Product Owners accountable for business outcomes and service levels (operating leverage, error rates, break resolution time, and time to onboard) instead of delivery velocity alone.
- Own the investment case for Operations technology by distinguishing additive spend versus protecting the run-the-business capacity floor, and defend the distinction in enterprise leadership and the annual budget cycle.
- Represent Operations product strategy, headcount, and application footprint in enterprise governance forums, including the budget planning cycle and platform-level roadmap reviews.
- Lead AI-native reimagination of Operations workflows aligned with future-state workflows and the Global Operations target operating model, redesigning how work gets done (not just automating handoffs), starting with high-volume, error-prone processes such as reconciliation, exception resolution, corporate actions, and guideline monitoring.
- Partner with Wellington’s Enterprise AI program and the Infrastructure Platform CIO to identify which capabilities can be delivered via agentic or AI-assisted approaches, and sequence that work into the roadmap alongside conventional change.
- Set expectations that AI-first is the default posture for new build work, not an add-on to standard delivery.
- Directly manage Operations Product Owners: set expectations, coach, evaluate performance, and develop each PO as a general manager of their product line.
- Build a unified PO leadership team across products with different demand patterns (run-the-business dominant and episodic/event-driven), establishing shared standards for backlog quality, prioritization discipline, and outcome definition.
- Resolve prioritization conflicts across Products that cannot be settled by a single PO, partnering with technology leaders on delivery while keeping technology accountable for solution design, engineering, support, and sustainability.
- Serve as Operations’ seat in the Cross-Platform CPO Forum with Investment and Client Platform CPOs, managing dependencies and priority conflicts, especially where other platforms claim Operations capacity.
- Collaborate with Global Operations leadership and division heads (Investment Operations, Client Operations, Fund Services, Private Operations) to align capabilities with business priorities and future-state workflows, including alignment with senior Investment and Client Platform stakeholders.
- Own Operations’ side of committed cross-platform and non-discretionary initiatives (for example, firm-level integrations and new regulatory disclosure regimes), negotiating scope and sequencing for every affected Operations product.
- Own the internal communications and change narrative for Operations stakeholders as the product model rolls out, addressing job security, reporting line, and capacity questions directly.
- Align Operations roadmap priorities with the Infrastructure Platform by partnering with the CIO and Chief Architect on technical vision and delivery approach.
- Set quarter-to-quarter investment priorities and capacity allocation across Operations products, working through Product Owners and partnering with the CIO organization supporting roughly 200+ FTE/FTC technology resources.
- Balance transformation with business-critical services by owning what gets built and why, while technology leaders own engineering, support, and sustainability.
- Participate in PI planning and enterprise governance as Operations’ business-accountable voice, ensuring committed outcomes (not only committed capacity) are visible to Infrastructure Platform leadership.
- Maintain hands-on depth as a product management and agile ways of working authority, coaching POs and stakeholders on the distinction between product ownership (business accountability for outcomes) and delivery management.
- Steward the Global Operations target operating model by applying the appropriate approach to different work types: protected run-the-business capacity for business-critical services and continuous processing, standard PI planning for discretionary change, and cross-product escalation paths for non-discretionary and inter-product demand.
- Establish and defend capability contracts governing how Operations products serve requests from other products and platforms, so priority is negotiated by agreement.
Requirements
- 10+ years in product management or product ownership, including experience managing a team of Product Owners or product leaders.
- Demonstrated ability to use AI to innovate and reimagine operations or servicing/middle-back-office functions, redesigning process and measurably improving business outcomes (not only adopting tools).
- Deep experience with agile and scaled-agile practices (SAFe or equivalent), with credibility to coach and correct Product Owners.
- Experience translating firm strategy and target operating model priorities into a multi-year roadmap across multiple operational domains, balancing measurable change outcomes with high-volume, SLA-driven services and capacity constraints.
- Proven ability to contribute to senior business leadership and partner peer-to-peer with Investment and Client Platform leaders, aligning business priorities with a Platform CIO’s technical vision without formal authority over their organizations.
- Financial services or asset management operations experience strongly preferred; direct familiarity with derivatives, fund administration, guideline compliance, investment accounting, performance and attribution, and trade settlement is a plus.
- Comfort articulating investment cases in terms of additive versus run-the-business budget impact and explaining prioritization decisions to governance audiences.
