Director, Data Product & Operations
Job Description
Tempus is seeking a Director to lead Data Product & Operations for its data platform in a hybrid setting in Chicago. The role sets the strategy, roadmap, and operating model for data partnerships and integrations, ensuring new sources move from intake to production launch with operational rigor and measurable outcomes.
What you will do
- Own the data-source strategy and multi-quarter roadmap. Define the approach and prioritization framework for integrating data sources and partners, balancing strategic value, clinical utility, technical effort, and compliance risk.
- Lead the cross-functional operating model. Set up and run cross-functional squads including Connectivity Engineers, Data Product Engineers, and Domain SMEs to execute end-to-end integrations from intake through production launch and ongoing operations for new data sources and modalities.
- Own executive-level partner relationships. Partner with commercial and legal leadership to evaluate prospective partners, shape data-sharing arrangements, and translate partnership terms into concrete product and integration requirements as a senior point of contact.
- Drive delivery and operational excellence. Create scalable, repeatable onboarding and integration processes across ingestion, normalization, quality validation, and ongoing monitoring, and be accountable for delivery timelines and operational SLAs.
- Set data product requirements. Own requirements for data formats, interoperability standards (including FHIR and HL7), metadata, and provenance so sources remain consistent and trustworthy, with standards that scale across the portfolio.
- Own productization for integrated data. Ensure integrated data is discoverable and documented for clinical, product, and research teams, and feed their requirements back into roadmap and strategy.
- Define outcomes and operational metrics. Set targets and report metrics for data coverage, completeness, freshness, quality, and adoption across data partnerships, using results to drive continuous improvement and inform leadership decisions.
- Own compliance and risk posture. Work with privacy, security, and regulatory leaders to ensure integrations meet HIPAA and applicable requirements for data governance, consent, and de-identification by design, while helping shape governance policy as the function scales.
What you bring
- 10+ years of product experience owning data, platform, or integration products, or comparable experience in data engineering, technical program management, or partnerships with a product orientation.
- Experience setting strategy and operating models for a function or portfolio, including scaling over time.
- Healthcare data standards and interoperability knowledge including FHIR, HL7, OMOP, and ICD/SNOMED/LOINC, plus real-world data (RWD/RWE) familiarity.
- Strong technical foundation with comfort working across data models, APIs, ETL/ELT pipelines, and data quality concepts, and the ability to collaborate credibly on integration design with engineers.
- Executive partner influence translating ambiguous agreements into clear requirements and managing relationships across organizational boundaries.
- Strategic execution ability to prioritize and drive delivery across engineering, legal, business development, and clinical stakeholders without direct authority.
- Excellent communication across partner conversations, executive briefings, and technical design discussions.
