Job Description

Lead the initial product strategy for commercial auto and emerging mobility, building the foundation for a scalable product organization in Costa Mesa.

Responsibilities

  • Define the organization’s long-term commercial auto and emerging mobility product strategy
  • Evaluate opportunities across light commercial fleets, connected vehicles, autonomous vehicles, rideshare, delivery, and other evolving mobility models
  • Articulate key differences between personal and commercial auto products, including risk, pricing, underwriting, coverage, claims, and operational considerations
  • Develop a point of view on how autonomous and connected mobility may impact commercial insurance
  • Monitor emerging mobility trends, competitors, OEM activity, insurance innovation, technology providers, and regulatory developments
  • Identify where the organization can establish a differentiated position in the market
  • Create a roadmap to move from the current state of no commercial auto product to a scalable offering
  • Assess potential market-entry paths, including:
    • Building capability internally
    • Acquiring or partnering with an existing organization
    • Choosing not to enter specific market segments
  • Analyze investment, talent, technology, regulatory, operational, and risk requirements for each path
  • Prepare recommendations and business cases for executive leadership
  • Present the product vision to senior executives and secure alignment on the recommended strategy
  • Define capabilities, resources, partnerships, and organizational structure needed to execute the strategy
  • Provide expertise in commercial auto product structure, coverage design, underwriting, rating, pricing, and risk selection
  • Partner with actuarial teams to evaluate pricing methodologies, risk models, exposure data, loss trends, and portfolio economics
  • Help determine which commercial auto risks and vehicle types match existing organizational capabilities
  • Identify future coverage needs driven by autonomous systems, connected vehicles, fleet operations, and changing liability models
  • Establish the foundation for product governance, regulatory review, underwriting guidelines, and operational processes
  • Support development of product requirements and implementation plans as strategy advances
  • Define roles and capabilities required to build a future commercial auto product team
  • Recommend organizational structure and talent profile for execution
  • Support recruiting and team building for product launch and ongoing management
  • Coordinate across product management, actuarial, underwriting, claims, legal, compliance, technology, operations, and marketing
  • Transition from primarily strategic work into product development and execution as the initiative progresses
  • Evaluate relationships with OEMs, autonomous vehicle companies, mobility platforms, fleet operators, telematics providers, data companies, and insurtech partners
  • Assess embedded insurance and partnership-based distribution opportunities
  • Represent the organization in relevant insurance, mobility, and technology discussions
  • Bring external market perspective and insights to internal stakeholders

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, finance, economics, management, or a related field (equivalent experience may be considered)
  • Significant experience developing or managing commercial auto insurance products
  • Strong understanding of differences between personal and commercial auto insurance
  • Experience with commercial auto pricing, underwriting, actuarial models, risk selection, coverage structures, or portfolio performance
  • Experience developing product strategy, business cases, market-entry plans, or new insurance capabilities
  • Ability to operate in an environment where the product, process, and team are still being built
  • Strong understanding of emerging mobility and related ecosystems (autonomous vehicles, connected vehicles, telematics, rideshare, delivery, commercial fleets)
  • Ability to explain how mobility and vehicle technology changes may affect insurance products, pricing, underwriting, liability, and claims
  • Proven ability to present recommendations and influence senior executives
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and presentation skills
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with practical execution
  • Onsite requirement: work onsite most days in Costa Mesa, California, or relocate to the area
  • Willingness to travel periodically for executive meetings, industry events, and stakeholder discussions

Compensation & Employment Details

  • Salary (base): $194,300–$259,100 depending on experience
  • Incentive: 20% target incentive
  • Full-Time, Direct Hire
  • Estimated salary range listed: $182,000–$260,000 per year

Location & Work Expectations

  • Location: Costa Mesa, CA onsite
  • Fully remote work is not planned; limited flexibility may be explored for an outstanding candidate
  • Relocation assistance may be considered for an exceptional candidate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with autonomous vehicle companies, OEMs, commercial fleet operators, mobility platforms, telematics providers, or embedded insurance programs
  • Experience with light commercial fleets, delivery vehicles, rideshare, or other emerging commercial mobility segments
  • Experience with an insurance carrier, insurtech, mobility company, or transportation technology organization
  • Experience launching a new insurance product or building a new insurance capability from the ground up
  • Experience evaluating build, buy, partner, or acquisition strategies
  • Experience with E&S, specialty, non-standard, or other complex insurance products
  • Experience with state insurance filings, regulatory approvals, product governance, or compliance
  • CPCU, AINS, ARM, or another insurance designation
  • Experience building and leading a product management or insurance strategy team

Position Overview

  • The organization does not currently offer commercial auto insurance products and is beginning to define its strategy in this space
  • Serve as the initial product leader for the initiative: help the business understand the opportunity, evaluate paths forward, and build the foundation for future commercial auto and emerging mobility product organization
  • Initial focus: light commercial auto and mobility segments aligned with existing operational and underwriting capabilities
  • Not a heavy trucking role
  • Initially centered on strategy, market analysis, product vision, business cases, and executive alignment, then transition into broader product development and team-building
  • Over time, transition from the emerging mobility strategy team into the broader insurance product management organization, potentially within 12 to 36 months as product vision and operating model take shape
