Product Operations Manager
Job Description
OpenAI’s Applied AI organization is building products that move from early experiments to reliable, widely available experiences. In this Product Operations Manager role (senior individual contributor), you will design and run the operational systems that support alpha, beta, and GA launches, while coordinating cross-functional partners around high-impact moments.
This is a hybrid position based in San Francisco, CA, with a structured approach to launch readiness, feedback capture, and scalable internal tooling. You will help shape the Product Operations function by codifying best practices, raising execution quality, and mentoring peers as the org grows.
What you’ll do
- Stand up and operate alpha, beta, and GA programs, including clear entry and exit criteria, and use qualitative and quantitative insights to inform prioritized product work.
- Own the launch calendar and readiness cadence for a product group, running cross-functional checkpoints with Product, Engineering, Research, Safety, Security, Legal, Support, and GTM.
- Build systems to capture, triage, and synthesize user feedback into actionable recommendations.
- Lead coordination for high-impact moments such as Dev Day demos, rollout waves, and partner showcases, managing timelines, resources, and communications to drive successful outcomes.
- Create internal tools and automations using code, no-code, or AI to scale operations (for example: feedback intake, issue taxonomy, release notes).
- Contribute to building and scaling Product Operations at OpenAI by documenting best practices, improving standards, and mentoring peers.
What you bring
- Experience in Product Operations at one or more scaling tech companies, working closely with Product and Engineering and cross-functional partners on both central systems (launch calendar and readiness) and go-to-market execution (betas and launch activities).
- Regular experience working with agentic AI tools to increase leverage (for example, Dots, Codex).
- An entrepreneurial, high-agency approach: ship initial versions quickly and iterate to quality at scale.
- Ability to build systems and tools (via code, no-code, or AI) that make internal processes simple, fast, and reliable.
- Strong self-prioritization and context switching across multiple projects and stakeholders without losing the thread.
- Clear, persuasive communication in writing and live discussions, influencing without formal authority.
- Engagement and curiosity about the evolving AI and agentic-systems landscape.
- Practical judgment to balance process discipline with avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy.
- Experience nurturing a fun, inclusive, high-ownership team culture.
- Understanding of LLM-powered agent technical nuances, including tool use, evals, telemetry, and safety constraints.
Helpful technologies and skills
- Experience with OpenAI tools and APIs (ChatGPT, Codex, text generation, structured outputs, function calling, and related capabilities).
- Programming: Python and JavaScript for automation scripts.
- No-code/low-code: Airtable, Retool, Zapier (or equivalents).
- Data analysis and visualization: SQL, Google Sheets automations, Databricks.
- Git and GitHub, plus comfort with terminal workflows and CLIs.
Compensation and benefits
- Base salary: USD 257,000 - 285,000 per year, plus offers equity.
- Medical, dental, vision for you and your family, with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
- Pre-tax accounts for Health FSA, Dependent Care FSA, and commuter expenses (parking and transit).
- 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
- Paid parental leave (up to 24 weeks for birth parents and 20 weeks for non-birthing parents), plus paid medical and caregiver leave (up to 8 weeks).
- Paid time off: flexible PTO for exempt employees and up to 15 days annually for non-exempt employees.
- Holidays: 13+ paid company holidays and multiple paid coordinated office closures, plus paid sick or safe time (1 hour per 30 hours worked, or more as required by applicable state or local law).
- Mental health and wellness support.
- Employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
- Annual learning and development stipend.
- Daily meals in the office and meal delivery credits as eligible.
- Relocation support for eligible employees.
- Additional taxable fringe benefits may be provided, such as charitable donation matching and wellness stipends.
Role location
- Based in San Francisco, CA with a hybrid schedule of 3 days in the office per week.
- Relocation assistance is offered to new employees.
