Senior Product Design Manager
Job Description
Fivetran and dbt Labs are hiring a Senior Product Design Manager to lead the dbt product design team and guide UX strategy across dbt’s product experience. This is a people management and product leadership role centered on technical data products and AI or agentic experiences.
Responsibilities
- Manage and coach a team of product designers working across the dbt platform and CLI-based products.
- Build a design culture that supports thoughtful, high-quality work for deeply technical users.
- Set clear expectations, deliver actionable feedback, support career growth, and strengthen conditions for strong design craft.
- Define and drive UX strategy across dbt’s product experience.
- Identify high-impact experience opportunities and align design priorities to product outcomes.
- Partner with Product and Engineering leadership as a strategic peer in roadmap and product direction discussions.
- Provide direction for design work across complex workflows used by technical practitioners.
- Lead design strategy for AI-powered and agentic experiences within dbt.
- Create design systems that help AI assistance be understandable, useful, and safe for high-stakes technical work.
- Plan how product surfaces support both human and AI agent interactions with the same data infrastructure.
- Operate as a change-leadership partner to co-create a unified product experience and design culture.
- Partner with the Director of Product Design to merge systems, processes, and culture.
- Help designers navigate a new organizational context by building cross-functional relationships and creating clarity during product and company evolution.
- Operationalize AI across the design lifecycle, including research synthesis and ideation, prototyping, documentation, and design QA.
- Establish shared workflows, quality standards, and review practices to increase speed while maintaining product quality and consistency.
- Define cross-functional standards for when AI-generated work requires design review, including human oversight, quality, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
- 8+ years of product design experience, including at least 5 years managing product designers.
- Proven people management skills, including coaching, performance development, direct feedback, and team culture building.
- Strong cross-functional leadership with Product, Engineering, Research, Data, Marketing, and executive stakeholders.
- A craft-focused leadership approach focused on direction, critique, strategy, and coaching rather than acting as the primary IC designer.
- Experience designing for, or leading teams that design for, technically complex products such as ELT, data infrastructure, analytics engineering, developer tools, cloud platforms, data governance, observability, or adjacent enterprise infrastructure products.
- Experience designing AI-powered or agentic product experiences, including understanding the difference between a lightweight AI feature, a copilot, and an agentic workflow.
- Experience operationalizing AI workflows for product design teams beyond prototyping, including defining how designers use AI across the design lifecycle and establishing workflows, standards, review practices, and quality thresholds for team-scale effectiveness.
- Experience owning UX strategy for a meaningful product area, with examples of design strategy influencing product direction.
- Strong technical fluency, including the ability to reason about complex systems, understand engineering constraints, and discuss tradeoffs with Product and Engineering partners.
- Experience designing for expert technical users such as data engineers, analytics engineers, software engineers, platform teams, or security teams.
