Job Description

January is building high-leverage consumer-facing experiences that support collections-to-recovery journeys. This Senior Product Manager role focuses on data-driven experimentation, trust, and real-time adaptation, including LLM infrastructure for conversations and outbound communication systems.

Role Overview

The Senior Product Manager will own one of January’s most critical consumer surfaces, including how the company reaches consumers, how it communicates with them, and how it earns trust that helps convert a missed payment into a fresh start. The role reports directly to the Founder and CEO, Jake, and carries responsibility for setting a new standard across strategy, experimentation, and production systems.

January views these positions as among the most important as the company scales from a single product into a multi-product organization.

What You Will Own

  • Consumer outreach and trust: Own one of the highest-leverage surfaces, including how January talks with consumers and how trust is built in the context of collections-to-recovery.
  • LLM infrastructure for conversations: Own the LLM infrastructure behind every consumer conversation, including chatbot, voice, email, and text, for one team.
  • Adaptive borrower experience: Advance LLM infrastructure toward a borrower experience that adapts to each person in real time, beyond what the industry typically attempts.
  • Outbound communications systems: Own systems that send millions of communications per hour, including email, SMS, and letters, plus the experimentation engine behind them.
  • Tuning outbound without a human in the loop: Build toward outbound that tunes itself by learning what to say and when, with no human in the loop.
  • End-to-end standards: Drive an opinionated strategy, run experiments to validate what works, and create systems that enable strong decisions without requiring constant oversight.
  • High-stakes execution: Operate effectively under legal, ethical, and financial constraints, using them to sharpen creativity rather than limit outcomes.

Reporting and Impact

  • Report directly to the Founder and CEO, Jake.
  • Both teams include significant ownership to define a new standard: opinionated strategy, proof via experiments, and systems that support good decisions without you in the room.

Requirements

  • Diagnose by addressing root causes quickly, treating “prescription before diagnosis” as unacceptable.
  • Make decisions with incomplete information, identifying the few key factors and acting quickly to obtain them.
  • Bring principles for what to do now versus later, sequencing work rather than attempting everything at once.
  • Maintain an extremely high bar and recognize that small differences can separate average product from exceptional outcomes.
  • Prioritize making the best decision over being right, updating quickly as evidence changes.
  • Reason from data and design experiments that isolate cause, partnering deeply with engineers to debate the underlying system, not only the roadmap.
  • Push LLM tooling deeper into product work, building skills and workflows that others in the company can run.
  • Have owned product strategy end to end with measurable impact on something real.
  • Enjoy building 0 to 1.
  • 5+ years as a Product Manager.

How We Work

  • Decentralization beats control: decisions are made by the people closest to them, with standards that allow teams to decide without routing every call upward.
  • Speed beats perfection: run tight feedback loops, act on reversible calls at around 70%, and iterate as learning accumulates.
  • Candor beats comfort: surface hard truths early and avoid polite sidesteps.
  • Writing beats the average meeting: clarity scales.
  • AI runs through everything: January built its own code reviewer and uses voice AI to handle most inbound calls with zero hallucinated payments; engineering teams ship 3–4x the PRs they used to. This role will extend that capability further into the work.
  • Work across altitudes: get into the trenches to learn ground truth, then refine information flows so ground truth improves as direction comes down.
  • In-person collaboration: build in person at least three days a week in the office in Nolita, with a growing group coming in daily for cross-pollination and trust-building.

Location and Compensation

  • Location: New York, NY (onsite)
  • Salary: USD 185,000 - 217,000 per year
  • Minimum experience: 5 years
