Sr Product Manager, Endoscopes
Job Description
Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci Multiport Vision team is seeking a Sr Product Manager to help shape long-term strategy and drive product development and sustaining for Multiport robotic endoscope visualization solutions. This individual contributor role owns the endoscope lifecycle from early concept and feasibility through launch, lifecycle management, and post-market sustaining engineering.
Working onsite in Sunnyvale, CA, you will report to the Group Product Manager of Multiport Vision and influence roadmap decisions across new product development and in-market portfolio support. The position spans a broad endoscope portfolio scope, with expectations that include user need discovery, requirements definition, regulated development execution, and partner alignment across engineering, quality, manufacturing, service, and commercialization.
What you’ll do
- Own and shape the long-term strategy for Multiport endoscope products, partnering with cross-functional teams to deliver visualization solutions for minimally invasive surgery.
- Identify unmet user needs; define and guide products through design and development; shape and guide the roadmap; and partner with downstream teams for commercialization, evidence, and messaging.
- Own and manage the Multiport robotic endoscope roadmap across NPD and sustaining, balancing platform needs, advanced imaging opportunities, reliability and quality improvements, cost reduction, and lifecycle management.
- Lead sustaining product strategy for the in-market endoscope portfolio, including failure-mode analysis, field-action prioritization, design improvements, supplier transitions, and obsolescence management.
- Drive new product development for next-generation Multiport endoscopes from early concept through launch by leading user research, requirements definition, design reviews, design verification and validation planning, and phase-gate progression in a regulated medical device environment.
- Capture, refine, and validate user needs for endoscopic imaging performance (including resolution, sensitivity, contrast, depth of field, color accuracy, illumination uniformity, ergonomics, sterility/reprocessing, and reliability) and translate them into engineering design requirements.
- Partner with engineering across endoscopic optics, illumination (LEDs/lasers and light path design), image sensors and imaging pipelines, system-level image quality, and mechanical or optical reliability, providing guidance that balances user needs, clinical value, technical feasibility, and system constraints.
- Develop business cases that synthesize clinical value, technical feasibility, and the competitive landscape.
- Partner with quality, reliability, manufacturing, and service teams to drive measurable improvements in field performance, customer satisfaction, and cost of poor quality.
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative research (VOC/VOE, segmentation, conjoint, ethnography) to inform strategy and make decisions about new imaging capabilities, performance thresholds, and portfolio architecture.
- Establish design requirements, prioritize design efforts, navigate tradeoffs, and document and communicate design decisions.
- Develop downstream claims and clinical evidence strategies to substantiate that upstream needs are met and support competitive differentiation.
- Collaboratively develop global commercialization plans and messaging with global portfolio marketing, regional marketing, training, and commercial teams, integrating regional nuances and global market needs into product architecture and launch planning.
- Evaluate emerging optical, photonics, sensing, and image-processing technologies with Engineering, Market Insights, and Business Development, recommending which should move into feasibility, development, or partnership exploration.
Additional ways you’ll contribute
- Monitor clinical literature, attend medical society meetings, engage with physician key opinion leaders (KOLs), and observe live robotic cases domestically and internationally.
Required qualifications
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum 6 years in a medical device role and 8 years cumulative professional experience in product management, marketing, engineering, business development, or equivalent.
- Experience operating within FDA or similarly regulated environments, including design controls, usability engineering, and risk management.
- Humble, mindful of others’ input, with clear, concise, professional communication.
- Self-directed approach with proactive skill development and comfort seeking advice.
- Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills, including influencing cross-functional teams without formal authority and bridging communication across engineering, design, marketing, sales, and customers.
- Presentation skills for internal and external audiences, including executive-level leaders.
- Quantitative mindset for breaking down open-ended problems and applying first-principles analysis to cross-functional initiatives.
- Ability to work creatively with competing priorities while managing multiple deadlines.
Preferred qualifications
- MBA or equivalent experience in the role.
- 6 years upstream Product Management experience (or equivalent) in medical devices.
- Experience leading both NPD and sustaining or lifecycle product management for hardware-intensive medical devices.
- Experience with imaging modalities used in minimally invasive or robotic-assisted surgery, including high-definition/4K, 3D stereoscopic visualization, fluorescence imaging (NIR/ICG), multispectral or hyperspectral imaging, and real-time video processing or image fusion; familiarity with endoscope or optical system development (illumination, filters, optics, sensors).
- Familiarity with optoelectronics, biomedical optics, photonics, image processing, or sensor technologies relevant to surgical visualization.
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
