Product Design Director (Individual Contributor), Customer Acquisitions and Management
Job Description
Capital One is seeking a Product Design Director (Individual Contributor) to lead customer acquisitions and management design execution within Experience Design. This role drives design strategy and craft excellence to deliver best-in-class customer experiences for core revenue-generating products, while partnering closely with research and Product and Tech leadership to elevate the design practice.
Location: New York, NY (onsite)
Compensation: USD 251,400 - 286,900 per year
Incentives: Eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
Responsibilities
- Lead design execution and elevate craft excellence across high-impact programs tied to revenue-generating products.
- Navigate organizational complexity across multiple lines of business, managing matrixed stakeholders to deliver best-in-class customer experiences.
- Define and drive design strategy that informs organizational vision and aligns to business objectives.
- Collaborate with research teams and Product and Tech leadership to strengthen the quality and maturity of the design practice at Capital One.
- Oversee and optimize the use of appropriate tools, platforms, frameworks, and design systems, and develop artifacts such as vision stories, journey maps, blueprints, high-fidelity designs, and prototypes.
- Provide guidance, direction, and mentorship to other design roles (including product design, content design, research, operations, service design, and motion design), and lead complex projects by directing junior designers’ work.
- Shape product direction and outcomes by applying deep product design expertise, user insights, and an understanding of the business.
- Drive alignment with cross-functional senior leaders so that user needs stay central to strategy and enable bold, innovative solutions to complex problems.
- Champion customer and partner voices, modeling a mindset where customer and business outcomes are complementary to exceed baseline needs and expectations.
- Bring expert knowledge of products, processes, customers, competitors, and industry market trends to guide how Design engages and solves business challenges.
- Develop innovative solutions by exploring the solution space, clearly articulating constraints, and balancing facts, priorities, technical limitations, and data to inform decisions.
- Connect teams, portfolios, platforms, and lines of business to create more coherent experiences, accelerate delivery, and increase design value.
- Present work across levels and job functions, demonstrating a strategic human-centered approach that integrates design frameworks, data, and research insights to influence senior stakeholders and achieve impact.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of experience in a product design role.
- Experience with a design toolkit spanning product design, service design, and content design.
- Experience leading high-impact, highly complex projects from strategy through delivery to market.
- Experience partnering with product managers, engineers, marketing, and analytics leaders across multiple business lines to shape strategy, OKRs, roadmaps, and operating models.
- Experience working within a design system.
- Proficiency with web and mobile technologies and platforms, navigating technology considerations and constraints to support sound product and experience decisions.
- Expertise with design and prototyping tools such as Figma.
- Proficiency in business case development, grounding product and user experience decisions in business value.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and relationship building across complex organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in a product design role.
- Experience with a design toolkit spanning product design, service design, and content design.
- Experience leading high-impact, highly complex projects from strategy through delivery to market.
- Experience partnering with product managers, engineers, marketing, and analytics leaders across multiple business lines to shape strategy, OKRs, roadmaps, and operating models.
- Experience working within a design system.

- McLean, VA: $230,400 - $263,000 for Director, Design
- New York, NY: $251,400 - $286,900 for Director, Design
- Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
