Product Manager, Genetic Identity
Job Description
Promega is seeking a Product Manager, Genetic Identity who can lead full product life-cycle ownership across assigned lines in the forensics portfolio. This onsite role in Madison, WI combines customer discovery, AI-enabled market intelligence, and cross-functional execution to support laboratories working in forensic and paternity testing, with a focus on scientific rigor, regulatory fit, and adoption that drives measurable business results.
What you’ll do
- Develop and deploy AI tools and workflows (including large language models, literature synthesis, and competitive intelligence platforms) to identify, characterize, and validate unmet needs across forensic and paternity testing laboratories, medical examiner offices, law enforcement agencies, and distributor partners.
- Build and maintain customer archetypes using laboratory workflow analysis, casework realities, and accreditation constraints, turning insights into opportunity definitions that inform product and R&D priorities.
- Track the competitive landscape, regulatory and accreditation developments, and scientific literature to anticipate shifts that impact assigned products.
- Contribute to early-stage business cases including market sizing, competitive analysis, value propositions, pricing strategy, and adoption forecasts, supporting investment decisions through portfolio reviews and gate committees.
- Design Voice of Customer (VoC) methodology for assigned product programs and translate VoC input into customer and product requirements in partnership with R&D on feasibility and design considerations.
- Align validated customer needs with GI portfolio priorities, ensuring each commercial opportunity ties to both customer mission impact and Promega business objectives.
- Define MVP scope based on customer-validated requirements.
- Act as the commercial voice in cross-functional product development teams, including concept-to-post-launch life-cycle management and decision-making across development gates.
- Collaborate across R&D, Operations, QA/Regulatory, and Commercial, influencing without formal authority to advance products and commercial outcomes.
- Balance innovation ambition with operational feasibility, aligning speed-to-market with scientific rigor and regulatory requirements in forensic and paternity testing markets.
- Own post-launch performance reviews for assigned products, incorporating VoC and updating commercial tactics based on financial and competitive results.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to manage responses to customer complaints related to assigned products.
- Recommend products for discontinuation, and own new product sales and distributor training content and delivery.
- Collaborate with the Sr. Segment Marketing Manager to execute adoption strategies during the first 24 months post-launch, including KOL identification, seeding plans, and sales enablement.
- Support launch messaging and campaigns with product and market expertise, establish shared KPIs for launch success and early adoption with Segment Marketing and Sales, monitor outcomes, and recommend tactical adjustments.

What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) or higher in a life sciences field, preferably molecular biology or forensic science. An advanced degree (MS or PhD) is a plus.
- 3+ years of experience in business settings within life sciences, diagnostics, or forensic/human identification markets.
- Strongly preferred experience in a forensic DNA, human identification, or crime laboratory setting, with familiarity with accreditation frameworks such as SWGDAM, ENFSI, and others.
- Demonstrated proficiency with AI tools and workflow design for market research, competitive intelligence, or scientific literature synthesis.
- Proven ability to develop business cases (market sizing, competitive analysis, VoC) that support portfolio investment decisions.
- Experience bridging technical feasibility, customer insight, and commercial framing to drive product decisions through phase-gate governance.
- Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives without formal authority across R&D, Operations, QA/RA, and Commercial.
- Proficiency with digital tools and technology, including Microsoft applications and mobile platforms, with the ability to adopt emerging technologies such as AI to improve efficiency, automation, and collaboration.
- Ability to operate a computer and phone, use Microsoft Office applications, and adapt to emerging technologies relevant to the role.
- Travel up to 15% of the time.
