Job Description

General Motors is seeking a Staff Product Owner to lead product strategy, roadmap, and delivery for GM Motorsports data and analytics products across NASCAR, IndyCar, and other racing programs. In this hybrid role in Austin, TX, you will pair product ownership with scrum leadership to help cross-functional data science and data engineering teams translate business priorities into measurable outcomes.

Role focus

  • Accountable Product Owner for cross-functional data science and data engineering teams supporting GM Motorsports.
  • Own and maintain product vision, roadmap, and a prioritized backlog for motorsports analytics and data products.
  • Align delivery to business strategy and measurable outcomes, while balancing scope, risk, and downstream impacts to recommend sequencing and trade-offs.

How you will work

  • Facilitate and continuously improve backlog refinement, sprint planning, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Ensure user stories are clear, with well-defined acceptance criteria.
  • Remove impediments and protect the teams’ ability to execute.
  • Translate complex requirements into implementable features and experiments.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, data engineers, architects, and product partners to define solutions that are feasible, scalable, and aligned with enterprise data and AI standards.
  • Drive alignment across multiple groups (such as motorsport engineering, IT, security, and operations) to identify and manage dependencies.
  • Provide concise, insights-driven updates and recommendations to senior and executive leadership, including context, rationale, and direction for delivery teams.

Metrics and AI/data thought partnership

  • Define and track product KPIs and adoption metrics, using data and stakeholder feedback to iterate on roadmap and backlog priorities.
  • Act as a thought partner on data and AI capabilities, helping stakeholders understand what is possible with modern data science and data engineering platforms.

Team leadership and culture

  • Model and reinforce GM Behaviors: Win with Integrity, Commit to Customers, Innovate and Embrace Change, Speak Fearlessly, Move with Urgency, Be Inclusive, Lead as One Team, Own the Outcome.
  • Provide informal leadership and mentoring to other product owners, analysts, and team members, and contribute to improving product and agile practices across the broader organization.

Required qualifications

  • 8+ years experience as a product manager, product owner, business analyst, systems analyst, or similar role.
  • Significant experience defining product vision, managing multi-release roadmaps, and delivering digital/data products in an agile environment, including prioritizing complex backlogs across multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a Product Owner and/or scrum lead for one or more agile teams (data, analytics, software).
  • Strong cross-functional influence without formal authority, partnering with technical and non-technical stakeholders at multiple levels.
  • Strong communication skills, including presenting concise data-informed updates to senior leadership and translating technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with data science and data engineering concepts sufficient to ask the right questions, understand trade-offs and constraints, and make informed prioritization decisions.
  • Ability to operate at senior scope by solving complex, often new problems, leading large/high-visibility initiatives, and mentoring less-experienced colleagues.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience owning data-heavy products or platforms in partnership with data science and/or data engineering teams, including defining SLAs, data contracts, and quality expectations for downstream consumers.
  • Familiarity with modern data and analytics stacks, including Azure, Databricks, Spark, modern data pipelines, and streaming technologies such as Kafka.
  • Solid understanding of data engineering patterns (data lakes/lakehouse, batch and streaming pipelines, warehousing, orchestration, observability) and the ability to discuss trade-offs with engineers.
  • Ability to read and reason about technical designs (schemas, pipeline diagrams, architectural decisions) to prioritize work.
  • Product ownership experience in engineering-heavy domains such as automotive, mobility, manufacturing, motorsports, aerospace (or similar), including defining and tracking KPIs for data/analytics products.
  • Formal agile training or certifications (CSPO, PSPO, Scrum Master) and experience tailoring agile in complex, multi-team environments.
