Lumen Energy

Founding Product Manager

San Francisco, CA Remote $172k - $215k/yr Full time Posted 2h ago

Job Description

Lumen Energy is building a commercial solar and storage marketplace, and it needs a Founding Product Manager to establish how product decisions get made from the earliest discovery work through delivery and measurable outcomes. This role will define and lead the product roadmap, create prototypes that reduce ambiguity, and run a steady cadence of user research while partnering closely with Engineering, Sales, and Marketplace Operations.

What you’ll do

  • Own and evolve a prioritized product roadmap for Lumen’s commercial solar and storage marketplace, grounded in real user feedback, business priorities, and well-defined success metrics.
  • Drive features from discovery into implementation-ready prototypes, ensuring the output is clear enough for engineering to build with confidence without repeated clarification.
  • Act as a connector across Engineering, Sales, Ops, and Leadership by synthesizing competing inputs, pushing toward aligned decisions, and keeping product work moving.
  • Define success metrics before features ship, then track whether the changes actually move the needle after launch.
  • Run continuous user research by speaking regularly with building owners, solar developers, and internal stakeholders, then convert findings into product decisions and priorities.

What you bring

  • 5+ years of product management experience in a high-growth or startup environment, including end-to-end ownership of product cycles from discovery through delivery and measurement.
  • Fluency with AI-assisted product development workflows, including the use of LLMs to accelerate prototyping, research synthesis, and spec writing.
  • Strong visual and UX sensibility, particularly because the team does not have a dedicated designer.
  • Strong written communication, with the ability to produce prose documents that convey business context and customer needs so engineering and AI systems can build without constant back-and-forth.
  • High agency and influence, including a track record of owning and defending a product roadmap and making difficult prioritization calls under constrained resources.
  • Business acumen to weigh trade-offs between user value, technical complexity, and commercial impact, and connect product choices to business outcomes.
  • Strong user research skills, including designing and running customer interviews, synthesizing qualitative results, and translating them into actionable product priorities.

Interview process (typically 2-3 weeks)

  • 15 minutes: Hiring manager alignment screen
  • 45 minutes: Introduction call with Kerri Devine (Head of Engineering)
  • 60 minutes: Engineering collaboration interview with 2 engineers
  • 45 minutes: Cross-functional collaboration interview
  • 45 minutes: Leadership and customer empathy discussion with Peter Light (CEO)
  • Additional interviews may be requested if more signal is needed in a competency area.
  • (Optional) Conversation(s) with cross-functional peers to interview Lumen

  • Salary range: USD 172,000 to 215,000 per year base salary, plus equity and an annual company performance bonus.
  • Final compensation determined based on experience, skills, and geographic location.
  • Meaningful equity in an early-stage company, including a 10-year post-termination exercise window.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) plan.
  • 16 weeks of paid parental leave for primary or secondary caregivers.
  • Flexible PTO with no formal minimum or maximum (encouraged at least 20 days per year).
  • Fully remote within the US, with a San Francisco office and quarterly all-team, in-person weeks.
  • Home office and equipment stipend.
  • $500 annual learning budget.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with two-sided marketplace dynamics.
  • Experience in commercial real estate, legal tech, or other complex transaction-based businesses.
  • Prior experience in a client-facing role such as customer success or sales.
  • Track record as the first or only PM at a company, building a PM practice from scratch.
