Product Design Engineer II

The Product Design Engineer II role at Trane Commercial Systems focuses on developing HVAC refrigeration systems for water-to-water HVAC equipment, supporting both heating and cooling applications. The position contributes to stage gate product design, validation testing, and engineering documentation, while leading projects and addressing quality and reliability root causes.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop HVAC refrigeration systems that meet performance, regulatory, quality, and cost requirements.
• Assess technical feasibility of product and internal requirements, design and select robust and cost-effective components, and develop engineering specifications.
• Apply applicable regulatory codes and standards, including UL, CRN, seismic, and ASME requirements.
• Create and maintain an engineering documentation package, including technical reports, lab test results, drawings, and specifications, ensuring documents are completed on time and reflect design intent.
• Conduct design FMEAs and execute risk mitigation plans to address knowledge gaps, failures (FRACAS), and DFMEA items to reduce the likelihood of quality escapes.
• Support internal and external customers by documenting, understanding, and prioritizing customer requirements.
• Use technical expertise to solve design problems and evaluate product fit for different applications.
• Participate in and lead project teams to achieve performance, reliability, cost, and schedule objectives.
• Provide technical support and guidance to laboratory technicians, manufacturing engineering, suppliers, technical service, and operations.
• Manage project schedules and teams for assigned projects.
• Overnight travel less than 5%.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, with at least 3 to 5 years of engineering or product design experience.
• Ability to function as a core team member on cross-functional product engineering teams and deliver select design elements for projects.
• Detailed understanding of HVAC system functions, including refrigeration, heat transfer, airflow, and ventilation.
• Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to understand and organize information needed to make engineering decisions quickly and efficiently.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate up, down, and across the organization.
• Ability to deliver and lead technical designs to meet project and product requirements.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Master’s Degree in Engineering.
• Background in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Experience with UL, CRN, Seismic (IBC/OSHPD), and ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC).
• Computer Aided Design (CAD) knowledge.
• Experience with FEA, structural analysis, and related engineering evaluation methods.
• Good understanding of the application of computer simulation tools and theory to HVAC system design.

Compensation

Annual base salary range: $65,200.00 to $93,660.00
