Product Manager III, Intent Understanding & Refinement
Job Description
Expedia Group is seeking a Product Manager III to lead intent understanding and refinement across Search and Recommendations experiences. This role defines product strategy, roadmap, and an operating model that connects traveler intent signals to relevant results, recommendations, and next-best experiences.
Role Overview
The Product Manager III will establish how traveler intent is represented and continuously refined across a shopping session. Travelers often communicate needs indirectly, through explicit queries, inferred preferences, evolving session context, and changes in intent over time. The position translates that understanding into measurable improvements for Search and Recommendations, while helping shape longer-term evolution toward adaptive, context-aware, traveler-centered experiences.
Responsibilities
- Establish a framework for representing traveler intent, including explicit queries, inferred preferences, trip context, constraints, and changes in intent throughout a session.
- Identify opportunities to improve how intent is captured, interpreted, disambiguated, refined, and passed to downstream experiences.
- Translate ambiguous traveler problems into crisp product requirements, measurable outcomes, and sequenced roadmaps.
- Partner with Data Science and Machine Learning teams on model objectives, feature priorities, evaluation frameworks, feedback loops, and responsible use of personalization signals.
- Work with Engineering and platform teams to define scalable interfaces, data contracts, instrumentation, and self-service capabilities that support multiple brands, markets, and traveler journeys.
- Own and identify opportunities to improve filters, including categories, labels, and models.
- Make prioritization decisions that balance traveler value, business impact, technical feasibility, operational complexity, and trust.
- Develop a shared taxonomy and language for intent signals and filters to align definitions, ownership, quality, and measurement across teams.
- Establish success metrics and guardrails covering relevance, engagement, progression, conversion, satisfaction, latency, coverage, and fairness.
- Use qualitative and quantitative research, experimentation, behavioral data, and operational feedback to identify gaps and validate solutions.
- Create alignment across a complex stakeholder environment and communicate product direction to senior leaders and delivery teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or equivalent related professional experience.
- 5 or more years of product management experience, including ownership of a platform or capability that other teams built on top of.
- Demonstrated experience taking products from concept to scaled adoption.
- Data fluency, including proficiency with experimentation tooling and the data analysis used to design and evaluate tests.
- Experience with machine learning backed products such as ranking or recommendation systems.
- Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows, and applying machine learning concepts to real-world products.
- Experience with configurable or low-code platforms where internal teams are your customer alongside the traveler.
- Experience trading organic relevance against paid or promoted placement, or a comparable commercial tension.
Team Context
The Product Team creates high-quality end-to-end experiences for travelers, partners, and Expedia Group. The team focuses on customer-centric innovation to build products that drive loyalty and repeat business. It partners closely across Expedia Group to support growth and outcomes for customers and the company.
